Even today, the question whether solid material or corrugated board is more appropriate for the production of protective packaging for cultural artefacts, still remains a relevant topic of discussion. The argumentation due to higher fire risk, the increased risk for water damage or even the possibility of pest infestation very often leads to the rejection of corrugated board as the suitable material choice for the production of products designed for permanent storage of cultural assets.
KLUG-CONSERVATION regards the factor of mass-preservation of cultural assets as a challenge to be tackled and is not just concerned with the preservation of a few, single valuable objects. For this reason, we have especially targeted manufacturing methods (CAD/CAM manufacturing of protective packaging) and materials (ageing-resistant, moisture-proof laminated corrugated and multi-layered boards with hardened, dirt-resistant, erasable and rub-proof surfaces as well as soft core board) designed for mass-preservation. All materials developed by KLUG comply with the technological requirements of the ISO 9706 standard and meet the material requirements of the "Board ISO 16245 – Type A" standard.
In addition to the technological paper criteria, materials for long-term archiving should also meet different mechanical criteria. Corrugated board is not only due to its lower cellulose material content (e.g. corrugated board MW 1.6 mm with 560 gsm versus solid material thickness 1.6 mm with 1200 gsm) an economical and affordable product, but also provides greater stability for the same material thickness compared to solid board material (light-weight principle; aircraft technology). On the other hand the advantages of solid board material are increased puncture and fire resistance values in accordance with the DIN 4102-1 standard.

The appropriate material for each individual case can be easily determined by defining the factors of importance and positioning them in the matrix. Our market experience and the analysis of our customer purchasing behaviour over the past fifteen years have lead us to the conclusion, that depending upon the importance of the examined criteria both solutions using either corrugated or solid board material are favoured.
